Literature
W. Schulz, Aert van der Neer, Doornspijk 2002, pp. 406-7, cat. no. 1121 (as copy or imitation).
Condition
Panel is flat and stable and is comprised of two horizontal boards joined at center. There are four beveled edges to the panel, which is uncradled. The image reads well, with a horizontal grain visible. The horizontal join at center is faintly visible to the naked eye, more prominently towards the right edge. Inspection under UV reveals a milky thick varnish. It also reveals some scattered areas of retouching to the sky, some fine lines at the edges, some spots in the distant cityscape and landscape at center, above which there is a 1 by 1 inch spot of what appears to be strengthening, and a few scattered fine lines and spots in the foreground. Offered in a decoratively carved giltwood frame.
