Catalogue Note
This figure was made for an altar, perhaps as a donor figure for a chapel of a choir, or for a funerary monument. The figure is unfinished on her left side indicating that it was originally set against a wall.
The appearance of kneeling figures on tombs became more widespread in the Lowlands and in England in the later 16th century. With hands clasped in prayer, they were meant to display the religious conviction of the deceased and were often combined with scenes from the Crucifixion or Resurrection.
