Description

  • Jean-Baptiste Oudry
  • A parrot and a dog on a stone ledge alongside a vase of flowers, a green curtain beyond
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas is lined. The image reads well beneath a clear varnish. The details in the animals are well preserved but there may be some thinness in spots in the sky, and in the curtain at right. An old stretcher bar mark is visible along the upper edge and vertically through center. Inspection under UV reveals some scattered small spots and thin lines to the curtain, to the sky, and to the lower stone edge. There are a few fine lines of retouching to address aforementioned vertical stretcher bar mark, and a few scattered thin lines in the two animals, with just a few fine strokes in the dog's coat and some thin strokes to the upper neck of the carrot and a few in his beak. There is a 1 by 1 inch area of retouched repair in the sky to the left of the parrot. The painting can hang as is and is offered in a simply carved giltwood frame.

Catalogue Note

This charming painting possibly dates from Oudry's early career, around 1710-1712, at the end of his apprenticeship with Nicolas de Largillierre. The ledge presentation, macaw, little dog, glass vase with flowers, and sprig of foliage are all elements seen in some of his earliest paintings, though the execution is different from his more developed style. Hal Opperman and Karen Chastagnol, who are preparing a revised catalogue and critical study of Oudry, believe that this work is very likely by the young Oudry, although they are unable to make a firm attribution on the basis of a photograph.  We are grateful to them for their assistance in the cataloguing of this painting.
