  • indistinctly signed and dated or inscribed on the palette: Angelic...An f/17..3(?)
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 25 March 1966, lot 25 (as by "Kauffmann"), for 440 Guineas, to Richardson.

Literature

A. Rosenthal, Angelika Kauffmann, Bildnismalerei im 18. Jahrhundert, Berlin 1996, pp. 20, 320, reproduced p. 322, fig. 119 (as circa 1766-75);
B. Baumgärtel, in Angelika Kauffmann, exhibition catalogue, Düsseldorf 1998, p. 224, under note 3, p. 228, under cat. no. 107 (as a copy of the self-portrait painted in 1773).

Condition

The canvas is relined. The painting is somewhat pressed in the darks of the composition, but mainly in the hand and easel of the sitter. The flesh tones and red jacket and white shirt are all well preserved and still retain fresh coloration. UV light reveals a somewhat dirty varnish with a few retouches above the varnish, particularly within an area of the craquelure on the sitters cheek and in her chin, as well as an isolated area approximately 1" x 4" in the lower right quadrant, and a couple other very small isolated retouches in the sitters shoulder. These retouches are visible in raking light to the naked eye. In a carved gilt wood frame.
