Condition

The relined canvas is firm and stable. The surface is clean and the painting is presentable. The paint surface has been generally well preserved and the painting reads very well and presents a strong image. Under UV light: there is a milky varnish which makes it difficult to read. There are possibly some retouches in his cloak at lower right, some tiny dots in collar, and a few in background lower left. This painting can be hung as is. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame.

It has been suggested that this may be a self-portrait of the artist, painted during his sojourn in Italy circa 1605-1614.
