Catalogue Note
In 1482, Matteo Civitali was commissioned by Domenico Bertini to replace the existing Cappella del Volto Santo in the Cathedral of San Martino, Lucca in which a marble figure of St. Sebastian was to be placed.
The present terracotta figure is a ཧreductio⛎n of Civitali's marble figure, probably made to commemorate the famous statue. A plaster of the marble was cast in 1866 and is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
