The canvas is lined. The painting presents a strong image beneath a clear varnish that is faintly inconsistent in some areas, but this is not too distracting. Old stretcher bar marks visible at all edges. A very small raised spot to the canvas is visible in background left of the figure's neck. There is a filled repair of about 1inch in diameter in the dark background to left of figure's head, and what appears to be a thin line of repair to the right of the figure's face. There is a faint horizontal scratch through red cloak to left of figure's chest. Close inspection under UV is impeded by a thick varnish, although there might be some old retouching underneath. The varnish fluoresces unevenly in areas, for example, to the upper right of figure's face and in his hand at left. A small old repair in background at lower right beneath his staff.
