Description

  • Abraham Brueghel
  • Still life of a bunch of grapes hanging from a twig, pomegranates, peaches, a melon and a salamander, all in a landscape
  • oil on canvas
  • 39 x 28 3/4 inches

Provenance

Augustus Thorndike, Boston;
Thence by descent to Rosanna Thorndike;
Anonymous sale, New York, Sotheby's, 8 June 2007, lot 240 (as Attributed to Abraham Brueghel);
There acquired by the present collector.

Condition

Canvas has been glue relined. Overall the picture presents a strong image with good retention of impasto, details and coloration, especially in the fruit. There is a small area of retouching at far middle right edge, possibly to address an old repaired tear or puncture. Small retouch at bottom of the melon. There is a tiny area of lifting and a pinprick loss near upper left edge. Examination under UV light reveals some scattered areas of retouching to the background at upper left edge, along top edge, above and to the left of the top bunch of grapes, and between grapes in the lower bunch; the aforementioned retouch at right and on the melon fluoresce, as well as a retouch to the pomegranate and peach at left and some scattered in foreground bear bottom edge. This painting is presentable and could be hung as is. In a gilt wood frame.

Catalogue Note

We are grateful to Fred Meijer of the RKD-Netherlands Institute for Art History, The Hague, for endorsing the attribution to Abraham Brueghel.  He finds the grapes, leaves and melon to be fully characteristic of the artist, and the smaller fruit in the foreground to be unusually finely painted.
