Catalogue Note

This Apollo and Marsyas follows the composition of a largescale canvas of the same subject given to Trevisani which sold at the Dorotheum in Vienna in 2006.1  Aside from its size, the present painting also differs slightly in its viewpoint, focusing more closely on the figures and cropping out the upper section of the tree. The present painting is possibly the same Apollo and Marsyas published by Decio Gioseffi in 1950 and subsequently listed by Frank DiFederico in 1977 (see Literature). The published painting, also on copper, was noted as measuring 22.5 by 20.5 cm., remarkably close to the dimensions of this work.

We are grateful to Prof. Giancarlo Sestieri for endorsing the attribution on the basis of photographs.
