Description

  • Jacques-Henri Sablet
  • The death of Pallas
  • oil on paper, laid down on canvas

Literature

J. Sureda (ed.), Goya e Italia, exhibition catalogue, Zaragoza 2008, vol. I, p. 252, under cat. no. 183.

Condition

This picture is executed on paper and laid down onto canvas. Overall the painting is in very fresh and healthy condition. The surface has a dirty varnish which is confirmed by uv light. Uv light shows just two very small retouches in the lower right quadrant which sit on top of the varnish. Otherwise no retouches at all are visible above the varnish, and with a light cleaning the painting would likely brighten considerably and be ready to hang.

Catalogue Note

This is a preparatory sketch for Sablet’s oil painting of 1778 in the Galleria Nazionale di Parma (149.3 by 99.5 cm.), for which he received a first prize in the painting competition at the Accademia di Belle Arti, Parma, in June of that year.  Like the Prix de Rome, the Parma annual painting competition took its themes from history and mythology.  The Death of Pallas is taken from Virgil’s epic poem The Aeneid, Book X: 495-449.  Another related preparatory sketch is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.1
