Catalogue Note

Possibly recarved from an ancient sculpture, this smiling faun or testa di satiro sorridente relates to Roman sculpture of the 1st/2nd century AD in which teeth often featured prominently in busts of fauns or satyrs. There is a marble bust of a smiling faun in the Vatican, Chiaramonti collection, and another was said to have been restored by Antonio Canova in the early 19th century.
