Catalogue Note

"How about "Dean Moriarty and his On-the-Roaders"? Karouac writes to Carolyn Cassady asking about Neal Cassady and suggesting names for young Johnny Cassady's band.

"Let me know, when you have time, how Neal is doing. Mysterious girls write to me saying how much help he needs from me. I'm about to be needing a job as a mailman, you can tell them. Johnny's band called 'Dharma Bums'? Nobody understands? How about 'Dean Moriarty and his On-the-Roaders'? that wd. make a hit once people knew he was Dean Jr., unless you don't want that. How about 'The Subterraneans'? Or 'The Desolation Angels'? Or 'Johnny Cassady and the New Catacombs'? Johnny Cassady and the Four Spooks. I find a lot of little group's [sic] names are lousy, like Dominos [sic] and all that. "The🐼 Animals" was the only original one. You 🍬are dear, my dear, and I can see your golden haired in the sun in the kitchen right now. My Maw's ill and I can't travel till winter at least. But I really do love growing older, funny huh?"

Included in the lot is a Christmas card, 1968, from Kerouac and his third wife, Stella Sampas. Stella has signed the card in both their names and Jack has added a note to Carolyn: "Be writing you ܫa letter soon — how's Johnnie? Where's Neal (Mexico?) — Did Cathy & Jamie go through school and on? Are you still 𒁃portrait painting? As for me, nothing to do but take care of house matters, sit, & think of any new book — (wrote one '67, pub. soon) — While you're at it, give my love (also) to Al & Helen. Jack xxx" Kerouac died in Florida nine months after this card was written.
