Catalogue Note

First edition, copy no. 6 of 10 copies on japan vellum signed by Lawrence and in this special vellum binding, of an edition of 510. “Most of the paintings reproduced in this volume were done in Italy at the Villa Mirenda in 1928, although some were painted in Switzerland and other places to which the Lawrences journeyed during the period” (Roberts). The exhibition of the works opened at Dorothy Warren’s Maddox Street Gallery in London on 14 June 1929. Police raided the exhibition on 5 July, confiscating thirteen of the paintings but these were eventually returned to the Lawrences. “The Paintings of D. H. Lawrence was the first book of the Mandrake Press, the moving spirit of which was P. R. Stephensen, who had been associated with Jack and Norman Lindsay in the Fanfrolico Press in Bloomsbury Square ... Lawrence was quite impressed with the proposal to reproduce the paintings in such an elaborate format and was especially struck with the ten copies on vellum which were to sell for fifty guineas” (Roberts).  A fine copy of this important rarity.
