Catalogue Note

Wicar followed the French armies to Rome in 1798 and lived there from 1801 until his death in 1834.  He was popular with all parties despite his role as a French commissary removing Italian works of art to France.  As a pupil of Jacques-Louis David he was best known in his own day for his large scale classical and biblical paintings and studies after the antique.  A major collector of drawings in his own right, Wicar left his remarkable collection to his native town of Lille, where a museum (later merged with the Palais des Beaux-Arts) was created in his honor to house it.
