Catalogue Note

Roberts first visited France in the autumn of 1824, visiting Dieppe, Le Havre and Rouen, where he sketched the cathedral for oil paintings exhibited in London at the Society of British Artists in 1825 and Royal Academy in 1826. The latter was his first ever exhibit at the Royal Academy.  He made further sketching trips to France in 1825, 1828 and 1829 to gather material for oil paintings. The present watercolor is the only located drawing of Notre Dame and is probably the one dated 1828 that was sold by James Hertz in October 1865 and very likely had been acquired by him at Roberts’ posthumous Studio Sale in May 1865, which included the undated, Paris - Notre Dame.
