Catalogue Note
Made predominantly in highly figured burl of nanmu, a material that seemed to be favoured by 16th and 17th century cabinet makers for usage in combination with huanghuali wood.
Examples of chests for books made in hongmu, nanmu and other indigenous softwoods, zamu, are readily available but those in huanghuali and burl wood are very rare.
