Structural Support The unlined canvas is securely stretched onto what I assume is the original keyed wooden stretcher. There is an overall pattern of raised lines of stable craquelure and horizontal stretcher-bar lines which could be significantly reduced should the canvas be lined, but it is obviously most encouraging to find the canvas in its original unlined state. Paint surface The paint surface has an even varnish layer and inspection under ultraviolet light shows two vertical lines of retouching in the upper left of the sky, near to the left vertical turnover edge and other very small, scattered retouchings. Summary The painting therefore appears to be in good and stable condition and no further work is required for reasons of conservation.
