Catalogue Note

In both form and decoration the present pair of vases illustrate the strong mercantile ties between China and the Middle East. The form is a kind of water vessel closely following models in Ottoman frit ware and the palmettes are a centuries old and popular pattern found on Islamic textiles. A similar vase in the Boysmans Van Beuningen Museum Rotterdam is illustrated in Christiaan J.A. Jörg, Famille Verte Chinese Porcelain in Green Enamels, Groningen, 2011, cat. no. 22.
