Catalogue Note

I am indeed a passionate lover of nature, wrote Giovanni Segantini in his diary on January 1, 1890. I am filled with immense joy upon seeing flowering alpenroses against the grey of the mountainous granite rocks or the soft green of meadows, all beneath by the endless blue of the sky.

These words by Giovanni Segantini, Gottardo Segantini's father, are perfectly reflected in the present work by his son from 1945. The painting depicts Piz Lagrev and the blue glistening Lake Sils on a bright spring day. Juxtaposing two larch trees in the foreground of an idyllic landscape, a fully grown specimen alongside a young one, Segantini appears to allude to the passage of life, on being and passing away. By means of these symbolist elements, Frühlingslandschaft is reminiscent of the renowned triptych by Giovanni Segantini, Werden – Sein – Vergehen ( 1896-1899). 

This work is registered in the Swiss Institute for Art Research (SIK_ISEA) under no. 69 151.

Aus🤡 dem Tagebuch Giovanni Segantinis: Savognin, den 1. Januar 1890.

Diese Gedanken aus dem Tagebuch von Giovanni Segantini scheinen sich auf eindrückliche Art in dem Werk seines Sohnes, Gottardo Segantini, Frühlingslandschaft aus dem Jahre 1945 zu spiegeln. Akribisch bildet Segantini an einem strahlenden Frühlingstag den Piz Lagrev hinter dem blauschimmernden Silsersee ab. Mit der Gegenüberstellung zweier Lärchen, einer jungen und einer ausgewachsenen, im Vordergrund dieser idyllischen Landschaft scheint der Künstler auf den Lauf des Lebens, auf Werden und Vergehen, hinweisen zu wollen. Durch diese symbolistischen Elemente erinnert die Frühlingslandschaft an das berühmte Triptychon von Giovanni Segantini, WerdenSeinVergehen von 1896–99.
