Catalogue Note

In the present work, Giovanni Giacometti painted a group of houses in snow-covered Capolago near Maloja in a wonderfully vibrant color palette. The intense sunlight in the region of the upper Engadine inspired the painter to colorful compositions featuring impressive plays of light and realize shadow as well as reflections on the snow. These works stood in stark contrast to the gloominess of the cold winters in Bergell. As of 1909 the Giacomettis had a secondary residence in Maloja, near lake Sils. Its surroundings are the main motif in many of the painter’s most atmospheric paintings, mainly executed in his late career.
