Catalogue Note

During the opening decades of the twentieth century Deutsch, who had made his name and fortune with his distinctive, photorealistic style, took his work in a new direction, painting on a larger scale and using a more impressionistic technique. From observing every muscle of his sitters' anatomy, every fold in their robes, every detail of their accoutrements punctiliously, he turned his attention to the impression, the effects of light and colour using flamboyant brushstrokes and a new and more vivid palette.

Having settled in Paris in the 1870s, Deutsch followed artistic developments there closely, and it was no doubt the rise of the New Painting - dubbed Impressionism - which inspired this new departure in his artistic output. His impressionistic style reached its climax in The Procession of the Mahmal through the Streets of Cairo (lot 7), a tour de force in size and expression. But he applied it with equal alacrity to a series of works of Cairo from the period, including the present one, a sna﷽pshot of a street festival, in which the 🐲Sultan Qaytbay mosque and mausoleum complex forms the backdrop.
