Oblong folio (245 x 315mm.), 211 albumen prints (from 80 x 80mm. to 215 x 272mm., or the reverse), mounted recto and verso on 20 card mounts,, including 8 full-page of Korea and 6 full-page of Japan, EXTENSIVELY ANNOTATED THROUGHOUT by Rittenhouse in ink on the mounts, contemporary brown half roan, green cloth boards, upper cover stamped in gilt 'Photographs', some mounts slightly chipped or frayed, binding worn, spine crudely repaired with masking tape

RARE HISTORICAL PHOTOGRAPHS OF KOREA documenting the construction of the Seoul-Chemulpo railway and the first locomotive in Korea "set up under the supervision of E.E. R[ittenhouse] Sept. 17. '98" (caption to image), with images of the Emperor of Korea and his court, together with images of ordinary people and life in the country.
Elmer Rittenhouse (1861-1920) played a significant role in the construction of Korea's Seoul-Chemulpo railway, where he worked from January 1898 to January 1899. The photographs include the workers and managers responsible for the construction of the railway, at work and at leisure, together with scenes of everyday life in Korea, including modes of transport, farming, military scenes, images of Korean children, punishments, views of Seoul and the palace, members of the Imperial family and court of Korea, costume for various occasions and employments, 'the Queen's funeral', street scenes, temples etc.
