Catalogue Note

Bernacchi, the first Australian to set foot on the Antarctic continent, relates the first deliberate wintering in Antarctica on the Southern Cross expedition of 1898-1900.

"Bernacchi’s account is a gem in the Antarctic literature… To him we are indebted for many beautiful literary images of the voyage. Bernacchi was only twenty-six at the time of publication but had an unmis🦩takable writing ability, amply confirmed in his subsequent literary output; the work is attractively illustrated with photographs taken by the au༒thor” (Rosove).

"The orig𝐆inal cloth binding of this first issue is quite friab🌃le, with the result that few copies survive in truly fine condition" (Taurus).
