Catalogue Note
FIRST AND ONLY EDITION OF THIS VERY ATTRACTIVE COASTING PILOT, translated by Serres from René Bougard's Le Petit flambeau de la mer (1810). Thomas Serres (well known for his coloured views of Liverpool) was marine painter and draftsman to the Admiralty, and exhibited at the Royal Academy on several occasions. He died bankrupt in 1825. "The views are very reminiscent of Des Barres and the plans etc. are coloured in much the same way as Bellin's Petit atlas maritime" (Wardington Catalogue).
