Catalogue Note
Numerous editions of this work were published but this copy appears to be mostly first edition. Part 1 has two of the plates marked 'second edition' (undated or dated 1825), the remainder have the date '1824', indicating a first edition; in part 2 all the plates are dated 1825; in part 3 they are all dated 1826; in part 4 three of the plates are marked 'proof', and all are dated 1826. As edition followed edition the portraits became more refined and 'europeanized' in manner.
