Catalogue Note
These important works are among the earliest to describe the antiquities and archaeology of Constantinople and the Thracian Bosphorus. They provided authentic and reliable sources of information for early travellers, and Coryate carried copies of both. Gilles (1489-1555) travelled with d'Aramon's embassy to the Porte in 1547, charged with collecting Greek manuscripts and antiquities for François I of France. He also travelled with Thevet in Asia Minor for a time.
