Catalogue Note
RARE PROCLAMATIONS, issued by General Allenby, following the defeat and expulsion of the Ottoman forces from Jerusalem on the 9 December 1917 by the Egyptian Expeditionary Force: "The defeat inflicted upon the Turks by the troops under my command has resulted in the occupation of your City by my forces. I therefore here and now proclaim it to be under Martial Law". Allenby also offers the inhabitants of Jerusalem re-assurance of his good intentions towards them and promises that "every sacred building, monument, holy spot, shrine, traditional site, endowment, pious bequest or customary place of prayer, of whatsoever form of the three religions, will be maintained and protected according to the existing customs and beliefs of those to whose faiths they are sacred."
It would appear that only 300 copies of each broadsheet were printed (one bears the imprint: "Govt. Press 4543-1917-300 ex."), and few examples survive today.
