Description
- Carved and engraved wood with natural earth pigments
- Height: 78 cm
Provenance
Private Collection, France
Condition
Please note there is a burn mark to the front of the shield approximately 10cm by 3cm to the proper left of the centre, and subsequent cracking to the wood in this area, visible in the catalogue photographs. There is what looks to be water damage to the pigment throughout the middle and lower centre of the shield. There is a surface crack extending 20cm up through the centre, and two smaller cracks parallel to this each approximately 5 cm long. Much pigment is still intact although there is fading, particularly to the white pigment. There are minor chips to the bottom edge and further chipping around the extremities of the shield. Subject to the above, the shield appears to be in good condition overall. There does not appear to be any visible evidence of repair or restoration, and the damage and wear is consistent with the works use and age. This shield is mounted on and sold with a custom made stand.
