Catalogue Note
In 1808 George Smith published his influential Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration. The carved monopodia to Smith's design for a sofa table (plate 83, 1804) relate closely to the present lot, as does his design for a library table (plate 87, 1804). The designs for these legs retain anthemion motifs which are very similar to the anthemeon carving on the lion-monopodia of the present lot. For a similar table with ebonized lion-monopodia legs see Margaret Jourdain, Regency Furniture, London, 1949, p. 78, fig. 181.
