Catalogue Note
The Scenery of Jixiangan is a masterpiece by Wen Zhengming in his mid-age that belongs to the genre of "alias paintings" termed by Zhang Chou (1577-1643). It was painted through the shared memory with his deceased friend Liu Xiezhong and of their visit to Monk Quanhefeng at Jixiangan (Jixiang Temple). The painting that was previously in the Qianlong emperor collection is now in the collection of the Chang Foundation, Taipei. Wang Guxiang (1501-1568) and Lu Shidao (1517-1574), who were students of Wen Zhengming, once themselves made copies of the master's original work, respectively in the collection of the Suzhou Museum and National Palace Museum, Taipei. Other copies bearing spurious signatures of Wen Zhengming have appeared in auctions. Upon close inspection, this painting--unquestionably well painted with elegant and antiquated brushwork--manifests much of the characteristics of the painting and calligraphy style of Wen Zhengming.
