Rectangular, the top inset with a panel of onyx, the exterior applied with a geometric pattern in white enamel, the hinged front with rose diamond handles opening to reveal a square dial of white guilloché enamel with blued steel hands within a Roman numeral border, to an onyx base, measuring approximately 60 x 30 x 37mm, dial signed Black, Starr & Frost, case numbered, French assay and maker's marks.

Condition

Please note that this watch was not tested for the accuracy of time or duration of the power reserve and may need service at the buyer's discretion. Please note that Sotheby's does not guarantee the future working of the movement. Stamped with French assay marks for 18 carat gold and maker's marks C.D. with flower to interior of doors to reverse. Reverse of case stamped Cadran Breveté, Made in France and numbered 28849. Dial signed Black, Starr & Frost. Movement running at the time of cataloguing. Manual winding. The dial is refinished, the white enamel has some discoloration and black dots commensurate with age, the glass has some very light surface scratches. The case has some very light surface wear and some white enamel loss. The onyx on the top panel and base have very light scratches and chips to surface commensurate with age. Diamonds are bright and lively. Hinge is in a good working order, closes securely. In good Condition. With associated box from Van Cleef and Arpels.

Catalogue Note

The configuration of additional, larger Roman numerals lining the dial and extending across the interior of the hinged doors of the present timepiece was an innovation patented by J. Vergely of Paris in 1925, designed to make the time easier to read.
