Description

  • Giusto Suttermans
  • Portrait of Isabella d'Este (1635–1666), daughter of Duke Francesco I d'Este of Modena, bust length
  • oil on canvas
  • 22 7/8  by 19 1/8  in.; 58.1 x 48.6 cm.

Condition

This canvas is relined and the surface has been slightly pressed. The image reads well, but there is some thinness noticeable on the hair, the right shadowed side of the face, and the white drapery. Inspection under UV light shows some scattered thin strokes of retouches throughout her face, chest, and robe, which have become slightly discolored and visible. A delicate restoration will help improve the painting's appearance, though it can be hung in its present state. It is offered in an elaborately carved, gilded frame with some minor nicks.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
