Catalogue Note

One of the rarest of McAleenan's privately printed books, likely only 12 copies issued, signed by 11 people including McAleenan and Carl Rungius. The poem present in the volume, "The Old Camp-Fire", is by Bret Harte, the writer and poet perhaps best remembered for his short stories featuring romantic figures of the California Gold Rush. Carl Rungius's paintings, reproduced here, feature a selection of verse by Robert Service, a British-Canadian poet and writer, often called "the Bard of the Yukon". Rungius himself was a leading American wildlife artist during the period, and he spent his career painting in the western United States and Canada.
