- 8.3 cm, 3 1/4 in.
each of irregular form simulating a rhinoceros horn libation cup, intricately carved in high relief on the exterior, one depicting two ferocious dragons contesting a 'flaming pearl', their scaly bodies sporadically emerging from dense scrolling clouds, the other similarly carved with a pair of phoenix perched amongst gnarled leafy branches of flowering peonies, the wood patinated to an attractive dark reddish-brown tone
Condition
The cups are made up of smaller pieces of wood joined together with lacquered seams, as characteristic of this type. The phoenix cup has minor repair to one phoenix head and a section of the peony branch near this. There are some minute nicks to the extremities of both cups.
