Description

  • 15.3 cm, 6 in.
carved standing dressed in a loose robe cascading in ample folds and delicately engraved with foliate scrolls, holding a scroll in one hand and her sleeves with the other, her face with a benevolent expression framed by a high chignon covered with a veil, the later stand modelled as a pierced rock

Provenance

Private collections.
Christie's South Kensington, 7th June 2017, lot 109.

Condition

There are shallow chips to the extremities, the most prominent measuring approx. 0.6 cm to the lower edge of the robe at the back. There are also slight losses to the pigment, and further minor surface scratches throughout. A residue of adhesive is visible between the figure and base, possibly securing the figure to the later added base. The actual colour of the stone is darker than the catalogue illustration.
