Condition

Overall very good condition. The glass surfaces throughout with some extremely minor and fine surface scratches consistent with age and gentle handling. The window with some extremely light surface soiling concentrated to the contours adjacent to the caming. The caming with a few scattered joins which appear to have been re-soldered. One long thin horizontal clear glass pane with a few small vertical cracks which have been sensitively stabilized by a professional conservator. There is a very thin gap (approximately 1 mm) between the came and the glass in the upper right corner of the large horizontal clear glass pane at the bottom, stable and likely due to the glass shifting very slightly over time. The tall thin vertical clear glass pane above with a with a very thin edge chip measuring approximately 1 ½ inch wide along the pane’s lower border, not visually detractive and only visible upon close inspection. The three iridized glass tiles present with strong and variegated iridescence. The window is presently installed in a later white-painted wood exhibition frame. A beautiful and strongly geometric design by Frank Lloyd Wright for the important Coonley commission.

Catalogue Note

The Avery Coonley Gardener’s Cottage windows are deceptively simple. Three iridized tiles of amber glass are balanced by bold cames, which frame out the central viewing pane and are accented by lighter horizontal and vertical cames. Characterized by strategic asymmetry and harmonious, linear composition, the presentation of these windows in a more minor structure is indicative of their experimental nature, foretelling the modernist De Stijl and Bauhaus movements that were yet to come.
