Condition
The illustration of the catalogue is quite accurate. Good overall condition despite the inevitable minor dents and scratches throughout. The construction is firm and sound. Decoration quite rubbed in places as visible on the image, with a few minor traces of rust. A final of an upright has been restored. There is no other traces of previous paint underneath, it is difficult to confirm the period of the paint as these beds were left unpainted or painted. The gilding of the arrows is later. Very nice quality for a rare model.

Catalogue Note
This fine example of the skillfulness by Parisian locksmiths demonstrates the growth of civilian bed production, ordered by the General officers during the late 18th century. It differs from campaign beds by its larger size and richer ornamentation. However, the influence of military furniture is further inscribed with its warrior attributes and its construction method for disassembly via elements that do not surpass the standard crate length. Nowadays, conserved examples are quite rare, which includes the civilian bed belonging to the Général Eblé (1758-1812) slightly later than the one we present. The presented furniture has the feathered arrow, which initially seems to have been employed in the decorations of metal headboards. This motif was notably adapted by Mesangère with his deliveries in 1807-1808 and by Neapolitan craftsmen during the arrival of Murat's troops in the Kingdom of Naples and of the Two Sicilies.
