Condition

The illustration of the catalogue is accurate. Good overall condition. There are the inevitable dents, marks and scratches due to age and use. The gilding is very slightly rubbed and tarnished with some stains. Dial has old chips, cracks and repairs. Movement is possibly associated and with later pin wheel escapement and adjustable suspension, it needs clean and service, the bell has been replaced. Please note that we do not guarantee the mechanism is in working order, it has to be checked by a professional. Nice chasing for an iconic model.

Catalogue Note

This wall clock was based on a drawing from “Livre de desseins” by Pierre-Antoine Foullet and Robert Osmond held at the library Jacques Doucet (inv. VI E 15, fol. 36-39). A comparable wall clock is currently in the collections of the Stockholm’s Nationalmuseum with a dial signed by Julien Le Roy. It is illustrated in written works by Svend Eriksen, Hans Ottomeyer and Peter Pröschel. The last reference mentions an example whose dial is signed by Osmond and which corresponds perhaps to this one presented here. Another model is also exhibited at the Musée Nissim de Camondo in Paris, on the ground floor’s vestibule. It is next to a barometer and its dial is signed "HILGERS / A PARIS".
