Catalogue Note

Pupil of Edme Dumont, Louis-Philippe Mouchy, Guillaume Coustou and Augustin Pajou, during the Revolution Louis Pierre Deseine remained faithful to the Prince of Condé, his main patron, and to the Bourbon family. After presiding the revolutionary meeting at the Jeu Paume, Bailly became the first Mayor of Paris. Finally, he lost favour with Parisians by violently dispersing demonstrations against the King. "You tremble Bailly - Yes, but it's because of the cold," was his brave answer to his executioner in 1793. A plaster of this model was presented at the 1789 Salon (Angers, Museum of Fine Arts , inv. no. MBA 848), another plaster is in Versailles, Lambinet Museum (inv. no. 778), and another in Paris, Musée Carnavalet. REFERENCES BIBLIOGRAPHIQUES:
