Catalogue Note
The eldest son of Louis-Philippe and Marie Amélie de Bourbon, born during their exile in Sicily, was named Ferdinand, as a tribute to his maternal grandfather Ferdinand I, King of Sicily. Back to France in 1817, Ferdinand was a young brilliant pupil with great abilities. At school at Henri IV, he became acquainted with Alfred de Musset, who remained a faithful friend. In Le Treize Juillet, the poet cried over the accidental death of the royal prince and the vanished expectations on his great future: "An hour has turned a whole century. O misery! ".
This beautiful and youthful portrait is the perfect adaptation of the Portrait of Ferdinand-Philippe, Duke of Orleans, painted by Jean-Dominique Ingres in 1842 (Louvre, inv. no. FR 2005-13).
