Condition
The movement is in working condition at the time of cataloguing. The dial shows signs of aging with light spotting throughout and it has been restored. The case is in good condition given the age of the watch but it has surface scratches throughout.
The watch has not been tested to determine the accuracy of its timekeeping. Please note that Sotheby's does not guarantee the future working of the movement and that a service may be required at the buyer's discretion.

Catalogue Note
Accompanied by a Vacheron Constantin certificate of authenticity. The reference 4178 is one of the best known Vacheron Constantin chronographs among collectors. Its design with the teardrop lugs and rectangular chronograph pushers makes it an ideal dress watch.
Production started in 1940 and continued until approximately 1964, with this example having been produced in 1948. The reference was made in yellow gold, pink gold, stainless steel and steel and gold.
