Catalogue Note
Accompanied by a Van Cleef & Arpels International Certificate of Authenticity booklet dated June 23, 2012. Together with Van Cleef & Arpels presentation box with travel case and outer packaging, booklet and hardcover Van Cleef & Arpels book. The total diamond weight is approximately 3.00 cts.
The exquisitely detailed dial seen here perfectly represents Van Cleef and Arpels' belief that the movement of the watch may be the heart, but the dial is the soul. This polar aquatic scene marries the skills of the firm's extremely talented craftsmen, including its jewelers, enamelers, and glass sculptors. These artists worked together to create a charming scene of a mother whale lovingly protecting her calf who playfully swims while gazing up at her.
The mother of pearl sky shines both above and below the water line, adding depth to the the myriad of blue tones that make up the water. Artists created a dynamic ocean-line by delicately carving the translucent glass to depict waves on top, before adhering it to the dial of the watch. The playful splash from the mother whale's tail brings vibrant energy to the scene. Thin iridescent layers of mother of pearl, delicately layered on top of each other to create the ice floes surrounding the whales evoke the beauty of the natural world, drawing inspiration from the nuances in the play of light over gleaming polar ice caps. The firm's reputation for using high quality stones in innovative ways is clearly demonstrated here with the diamond-set mother whale, who radiates vividly against the blue surface.
Van Cleef & Arpels drew inspiration from the noted author Jules Verne's legendary Voyages Extraordinaires series of adventure novels for its Extraordinary Dials series. The atelier produced an array of limited edition timepieces that paid homage to Verne's lush depictions of locations around the globe. True to the spirit of Verne, the firm's designers traveled to Antarctica to gather inspiration from its breathtaking landscapes for this series of watches. The level of skilled artistry in its design is a true testament to the firm's desire to bring the delicacy and vitality of the natural world to life through each of their creations.
The present lot is number 6 of a limited series of 22.
