Catalogue Note
Accompanied by a Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming the date of sale on September 21, 1999, with black dial and applied Arabic numerals. Patek Philippe introduced the Reference 5070 in 1998 after nearly 30 years of hiatus from the production of chronograph wristwatches by the firm, and were an instant success. In fact, the last chronograph model produced prior to the 5070 was the Reference 1463, production of which ceased in the late 1960s. For an example of Reference 1463, please see lot 322.
The calibre 27 70 157 is widely recognized as one of the best chronograph movements and is based on a Nouvelle Lemania ébauche specially developed for Patek Philippe. The movement was only used in the 5070 and 5071 references (the white gold diamond-set version of the 5070).
Production of the present model ceased in 2010 with the introduction of the reference 5170.
