Condition
The canvas is not lined. UV light inspection reveals a horizontal fine line approximately 2cm long towards the lower right corner and there is a further spot of fluorescence toward the centre of the left edge which could relate to retouching. There are a few scattered spots of discoloration to the varnish and some minor frame abrasion at the extreme edges. There are some small deposits of gold paint predominantly along the lower edge possibly from a previous frame. The open book in the lower part of the composition has some fine lines of craquelure. The work is in overall good condition and may benefit from a clean.
