Catalogue Note
TRUE GRACE & SERENITYThe mystery setting, a truly remarkable mastery by Van Cleef & Arpels. Balancing the desire of a painter with the power of a jeweler, their workmanship unites precious metals and gemstones together, creating works of art which stand the test of time.
The magic begins by selecting the most precious jewels of even hue and saturation, be it sapphires, emeralds or rubies. The hand-picked stones are then carefully engraved just below the girdles, and then fitted in one by one on to metal rails and fastened without any metal visible to the admirer. This creates an entirely smooth canvas that is three-dimensional, perfectly packed with matching colour and with a suppleness that twists and turns to adapt to any design.
Skillfully set with diamonds on yellow gold, this brooch from lot 1778 depicts a swan, long revered as a symbol of love and music. Swans were admired as aesthetic muses throughoutthe ages, seen from examples such as Leda and the Swan from Greek mythologies and the ballet of Swan Lake by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Therefore it is no surprise that the sumptuous plumages of the bird are poetically adorned with the sweet red of rubies.
Since opening in 1906, nature has always been a theme favoured by Van Cleef & Arpels. Starting from the 1950s, the Maison has produced flocks of opulent, gem-dazzled birds, ranging from exotic to exuberant – each carrying the mark of the ingenuity of the designer inspired by nature. From this distinguished bejeweled menagerie of fine legacy, a graceful swan stands out from the rest, with its balletic glide on the river surface captured in an eternal moment. For collectors of fine jewels from all ages, this would be a treasure not to miss.
