Condition
The canvas has been relined. There is an area of the canvas which has been repaired in the center, between the Madonna and the putti, likely from a former tear or hole. It measures about four inches high and one inch wide and is solely in the brown area, not touching the figures. A large canvas patch can be seen on the relining. The retouching of this area is evident to the naked eye, though as it is in the background it is not distracting. Other than scattered retouchings, the only other larger area which fluoresces under ultraviolet light is just below the Angel's arm and above the Madonna's head, again in the brown background. The painting is dirty overall, the varnish has yellowed dulled over time, emphasizing the craqueleure in certain areas of the painting. The paint layer is stable and the work would benefit from a clean. Offered in a giltwood frame.
