  • Mystic marriage of Saint Catherine of Alexandria
  • oil on canvas, in an 18th century frame
  • 33 1/2  by 31 3/4  in.; 85.1 by 87 cm.

Provenance

Anonymous sale, Vienna, Dorotheum, 19 March 1968, lot 76 (as Carlo Maratti, with an expertise from Roberto Longhi dated 15 May 1967).

Condition

The canvas has been lined and the painting is flat and stable. The colors are rich and bright throughout the painting, and the blues and yellows are particularly well-preserved. There is a fresh, even varnish and the painting is ready to hang as is. No inpainting is visible to the naked eye, though there are scattered, small retouchings throughout the composition that fluoresce under ultra violet light. The blue cloak on the Madonna is relatively untouched, though there are some minor retouchings throughout her pink cloak and in the pinks of Christ. The Angel at left has little to no inpainting, though the angel on the right does have retouchings in his face and neck, mostly in the darker shadows. St. Catherine has a few minor areas of repaint on her forehead and neck. Overall the painting has been beautifully restored and appears vibrant throughout the composition. Offered in a giltwood frame.

Catalogue Note

Andrea Procaccini, a painter, draughtsman and architect, was a pupil of Carlo Maratti in Rome, where he was a member of the Accademia di San Luca.  In 1720, he moved to Spain where he worked for Philip V and remained in that country until his death in 1734. This composition of this Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine may be based on a prototype by Maratti. There is a preparatory drawing by Procaccini of the partial figure of the Virgin in Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, Madrid (Inv. no. D-1450a). We are grateful to Dario Beccarini for his assistance in cataloguing this lot and for bringing to our attention the related drawing in Madrid.
