bears signature on the reverse: 'Raphael' oil on copper The present painting is a copy after a drawing by Raphael, most likely dating between 1504–08, today in the Louvre, Paris (inv. no. 3949).1 The drawing does not relate to any known paintings by the artist, although many copies and engravings exist. This type of tender scene, which shows the Christ Child and Saint John interacting whilst in the arms of their respective mothers Mary and Elizabeth, was hugely popular throughout the 16th century. 1 //www2.culture.gouv.fr/public/mistral/joconde_fr?ACTION=RETROUVER&FIELD_1=DOMN&VALUE_1=&FIELD_2=Ctyob&VALUE_2=&FIELD_3=AUTR&VALUE_3=RAPHAEL&FIELD_4=Clieu&VALUE_4=&FIELD_5=REPR&VALUE_5=&FIELD_6=Cdate&VALUE_6=&FIELD_7=DECV&VALUE_7=&FIELD_8=LOCA&VALUE_8=&FIELD_9=Num%e9ro%20d%27inventaire&VALUE_9=&FIELD_10=Mat%e9riaux%2ftechniques&VALUE_10=&NUMBER=106&GRP=5&REQ=%28%28RAPHAEL%29%20%3aAUTR%20%29&USRNAME=nobody&USRPWD=4%24%2534P&SPEC=5&SYN=1&IMLY=&MAX1=1&MAX2=1&MAX3=200&DOM=All

Condition

All paintings available to view at the Sotheby’s Greenford Park warehouse, 5 - 7 and 10 – 13 September (10 - 4pm), by appointment. The copper plate is flat and stable, the paint surface is quite dirty and the varnish slightly discoloured. There is slight surface cracking in the upper left corner, with associated retouching. Very close inspection reveals a pin prick hole in the copper in the right hand corner at the very edge, as well as a very faint horizontal 'tear' starting in the lower half of the right margin, approx 0.5 cm. long. Inspection under ultraviolet confirms the aforementioned retouching under the uneven varnish, as well as a few small spots sparsely scattered throughout.
