Description
- The Patience of Job
- Unframed: 108.1 x 90.2 cm.; 42 1/2 x 35 1/2 in. Framed: 125 x 107.6 cm.; 49 1/4 x 42 3/8 in.
oil on canvas The present work is a copy after Langetti's painting of 'circa' 1670, that is today with Robert Simon Fine Art.1 The subject matter of Job and his wife was treated several times by the artist – perhaps a reflection of the veneration given to this archetype of patience and suffering in Venice, where Job was considered a saint. 1 //www.robertsimon.com/pagel
Condition
All paintings available to view at the Sotheby’s Greenford Park warehouse, 5 - 7 and 10 – 13 September (10 - 4pm), by appointment. The canvas is lined, the paint surface is quite dirty and the varnish is discoloured and shiny. The canvas shows slight evidence of wear throughout. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals the thick, uneven varnish, beneath which an area of restoration is visible to the right of Job's shoulder, measuring 2.5 x 7.5 cm., as well as further spots in his proper left leg, above his proper right shoulder, and an area in the lower left corner, measuring 7 x 6cm. There may be older retouchings, but these are difficult to discern underneath the varnish.
