Provenance

Aldo Noseda, Milan;
His sale, Milan, Galleria Pesaro, 2–5 December 1929, lot 57 and 58 (as Carlo Francesco Nuvolone).

Literature

F.M. Ferro, Nuvolone, una famiglia di pittori nella Milano del '600, Soncino 2003, p. 248, under cat. no. g52.

Condition

The panels are uncradled, flat and stable. The paint surfaces are very dirty and the varnishes discoloured. There are pin-prick losses visible in both paintings, in the upper margin above the angel's head, and above the Madonna's head and in her forehead caused by old woodworm. There is a vertical split in the panel depicting the Madonna which runs from the centre of the upper margin measuring 6 cm. There are also some visible discoloured retouchings to a small area in the angel's wing upper left and just above his thumb, and in the Madonna's veil and scattered in the background behind her. Inspection under ultraviolet light is impeded by the old varnish, but confirms the aforementioned spot retouchings. There appears to be very little other intervention however. The panels are in overall good condition and will benefit greatly from cleaning. Offered in carved and painted wood frames in good condition.
